The E-E-A-T framework — Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness — developed specifically for Google's traditional quality evaluation, appears to carry directly over as a relevant framework for understanding what makes a source credible enough for an AI system to cite confidently.
An AI system, like a human quality rater, is fundamentally trying to assess whether a source can be trusted to provide accurate, credible information — the same underlying question E-E-A-T was designed to help answer, applied to a different kind of evaluator.
An AI system deciding whether to cite you is running roughly the same credibility check a careful human reader would — the E-E-A-T framework was already a good description of what that check looks like, for either audience.
AI systems may weigh certain signals — like structured, unambiguous entity data — somewhat more heavily than a human rater would, given their reliance on confident, automated attribution, making the technical implementation of these trust signals (schema, consistency) particularly relevant here.
It is not officially, explicitly confirmed by every AI platform as a documented citation criterion, but the underlying logic and observed patterns strongly suggest the same fundamental credibility signals matter, given the framework's broader logical alignment with any credibility assessment.
It is more likely to be considered credible once retrieved, but content structure (answer-first framing, clear chunking) still affects whether it gets retrieved and extracted accurately in the first place — both dimensions matter.
Generally not — the same improvements (credentialed authorship, transparent sourcing, verifiable entity signals) serve both purposes simultaneously without requiring a separate, AI-specific approach.
If you want help strengthening your E-E-A-T signals for both traditional SEO and AI trust, talk to our team.
Apply the same E-E-A-T audit you would for traditional SEO to your AI visibility strategy — the same signals (named expertise, genuine experience, verifiable trust) appear to matter for both, just evaluated by a different kind of system.
