Case studies and credential design for professional services firms

How to write and design case studies that a prospective client actually believes, and how to present credentials without confidentiality issues.

Signing a document at a desk

A case study that only describes the service provided, without a specific problem and measurable outcome, reads as marketing copy rather than proof. The most credible case studies read almost like a short, honest account of what actually happened.

Structuring a case study that gets believed

  • State the client's actual situation and problem specifically, without needing to name them if confidentiality requires anonymity.
  • Describe what was actually done, including any complication encountered along the way.
  • State the outcome with a real number or timeframe where possible, not a vague 'significant improvement'.

Handling confidentiality

Anonymised case studies ('a mid-sized manufacturing client') can still be specific and credible if the details of the problem and outcome are concrete, even without naming the client. Vagueness about the outcome is a bigger credibility problem than anonymity about the name.

A vague case study with no real numbers reads as marketing. A specific one, even anonymised, reads as proof.

Credential design

Present qualifications, bar or institute memberships and years of experience factually, without inflating titles or implying a broader scope of practice than is actually held — this is both an ethical requirement in most professions and simply more credible to a client doing their own checking.

The takeaway

Write case studies around the client's actual problem and outcome, with specific numbers where possible, rather than a vague description of the service provided.
