Many AI systems using retrieval-augmented generation process web content by breaking it into smaller chunks — often paragraph or section-sized pieces — retrieving the most relevant chunks for a given query rather than processing an entire page as one indivisible unit. Understanding this mechanism directly informs how content should be structured.
If a specific chunk (a paragraph or section) only makes sense with context from several paragraphs earlier, and that earlier context is not retrieved alongside it, the isolated chunk can be misunderstood or lose its meaning entirely when processed independently by the retrieval system.
Write every section as if a reader might genuinely encounter only that section, with no other context — because for an AI retrieval system, that is often exactly what happens.
This same self-containment principle directly supports passage ranking and featured snippet extraction — content structured for good LLM chunking tends to be structured well for these traditional search features too, reinforcing the substantial overlap between SEO and GEO best practice.
Read a specific section's heading and the text immediately beneath it in isolation, imagining the rest of the page does not exist — if it still makes complete, accurate sense on its own, it is well-chunked; if it depends heavily on context from elsewhere, it likely needs restructuring.
No, it is about internal structure, not overall length — a long, comprehensive page can still be well-chunked if each section within it is genuinely self-contained and clear.
This varies by system and implementation, but paragraph to section-sized chunks are common — writing at that granularity with self-containment in mind is a reasonable, practical target.
It can require a deliberate tradeoff for narrative-heavy content, though for most informational and instructional content, self-contained sections do not meaningfully harm readability or flow.

Read each of your section headings and the paragraph beneath it in isolation, pretending the rest of the page does not exist — if it still makes complete sense, it is well-chunked for LLM retrieval.
