Google Ads for manufacturing companies: bidding on long, technical searches

How manufacturers should approach Google Ads given long research cycles and multiple decision-makers, and why broad industry terms rarely justify the spend.

Welding work on a factory floor

Manufacturing purchases often involve three or four people and a sales cycle of weeks or months, which makes the usual e-commerce logic of Google Ads — measure conversions same-day — a poor fit. The campaign structure still matters, but success has to be judged over a longer window and against quote requests, not instant purchases.

  • Group ads by product family and specification, not one broad 'industrial components' campaign.
  • Send each ad to the specific product page matching the search, never the homepage.
  • Track quote requests and datasheet downloads as conversions, since a purchase decision itself happens weeks later.

Why broad industry terms usually waste budget

A term like 'industrial equipment supplier' pulls in students, competitors and buyers far outside your actual product range. The clicks are often cheap individually but add up to spend with almost no realistic path to a quote. Specification-level terms cost more per click but convert at a rate that usually justifies it.

A manufacturing buyer researching for weeks will not convert on the first click — track the quote request, not the sale.

Remarketing matters more here than first-click conversion

Given the long research cycle, remarketing to visitors who viewed a product page but did not request a quote often produces a better return than chasing new clicks. Segment remarketing lists by product family so the follow-up ad stays relevant to what they actually looked at.

A realistic budget test

Run a focused campaign on your two or three highest-margin product families for at least a full quarter before judging results — the sales cycle length means a month of data rarely tells you enough.

The takeaway

Bid on specification-level search terms, and send each ad to the exact product page that matches it, not to the homepage.
