A team spends two weeks on a detailed guide. It goes on the blog, someone pastes the opening paragraph and a link into LinkedIn, the same link goes into the newsletter, and a WhatsApp broadcast repeats the LinkedIn text word for word. People who follow the business on more than one channel feel they are reading the same thing again, and the guide gets less attention than the effort deserved. Repurposing works when each version is rebuilt for its channel, not copied across.
Not every piece should be stretched across five channels. Good candidates contain first-hand experience, a clear process, a considered opinion or a full answer to a question buyers keep asking. A thin announcement will not survive being rebuilt.
Take a shipping platform's guide for online sellers on reducing cash-on-delivery orders that come back undelivered. It covers why those orders return, verifying addresses and phone numbers before dispatch, encouraging prepaid payment, and handling customers who refuse deliveries repeatedly. That is enough material for several distinct pieces.
Read the original and list the separate ideas inside it. Each should stand on its own: a claim, a step, a common mistake, an example or a checklist. The guide above might yield:
Then assign ideas to channels. Each version carries one idea, or a tight group of related ones, rather than a compressed copy of the whole guide.
If someone sees every version, each one should still teach them something new.
Each channel is read in a different setting, with different patience, so the same idea needs a different shape.
Email and WhatsApp reach people directly, and repurposed content does not change the rules for reaching them. The DPDP Act 2023 expects consent to be free, specific and clearly given, and WhatsApp's business policies require people to opt in before a business messages them. Broadcast lists in the WhatsApp Business app only reach contacts who have saved your number. On the WhatsApp Business Platform, messages you start outside an open customer service window must use approved templates.
For overseas subscribers, GDPR in Europe, CASL in Canada and CAN-SPAM in the United States set different rules on consent, sender identification and opting out. Whichever list a version goes to, include a working unsubscribe link and your business postal address in every marketing email.
Publish the full piece on your own site first, so it is the version search engines find and the one every other version links to. Release the channel versions over two or three weeks rather than on a single day. Someone who reads your newsletter and follows you on LinkedIn then meets the idea in two different forms, which reinforces it instead of repeating it.
Add UTM parameters to links in emails, LinkedIn posts and WhatsApp messages, so GA4 shows which versions sent readers back to the full guide. Keep a simple record for each original: which idea went where, on what date and with what response. After a few cycles you will know which channels suit which kinds of idea, and you can plan the channel versions while briefing the original article rather than scrambling after it goes live.
Choose your most useful article from the past year and write down the single idea each channel version will carry before you draft any of them.
