Content decay — the gradual decline in a page's traffic and rankings over time, covered in our content decay guide — means an existing library of published content represents an ongoing maintenance need, not a one-time investment. Refreshing existing pages is frequently a faster, higher-return activity than writing entirely new content.
An existing page already has some accumulated backlinks, internal links and search history — a refresh builds on this existing foundation, while new content starts from zero and typically takes longer to accumulate comparable authority signals.
A superficial refresh — changing the publish date without substantively improving the content — provides little real value and can even appear manipulative. A genuine refresh updates outdated information, adds new depth or data, improves structure, and addresses gaps relative to current top-ranking competitors.
Changing a date stamp is not a content refresh — it is a content refresh in name only, and Google's systems are generally capable of recognising the difference.
Sort existing content by a combination of historical traffic and time since last substantive update — pages that once performed well but have not been touched in over a year are usually the highest-value refresh candidates, more so than either brand new or already actively maintained content.
This varies by topic volatility — fast-changing topics (like this one, algorithm updates) may need refreshing every few months, while more evergreen topics might only need attention annually.
No, and generally should not — keeping the same URL preserves accumulated authority and backlinks, which is a key part of why refreshing outperforms starting fresh.
Showing a genuine 'last updated' date, distinct from the original publish date, is generally good practice for both reader trust and signalling genuine freshness rather than appearing to backdate content.
