Negative SEO refers to deliberate attempts by a third party to damage a competitor's search rankings, typically through spammy link building pointed at the target site, content scraping, or fake review campaigns. Genuine attacks are less common than site owners often assume, but real, and worth knowing how to recognise.
A genuine negative SEO attack usually shows a specific, identifiable pattern — a sudden spike in low-quality backlinks from clearly unrelated, spammy sites, often appearing in a short window. Normal ranking fluctuation, by contrast, rarely correlates with such a specific, sudden link pattern.
Google's systems are generally good at recognising and discounting clearly manipulative link spam automatically, without requiring action on your part — as covered in our Penguin update explainer. The disavow tool is available for cases where you have specific, strong evidence of a deliberate, harmful pattern.
Google's algorithms are the primary defence against most link-based negative SEO attacks — your own action is usually a secondary, supporting step, not the whole defence.
If you suspect direct hacking or site compromise rather than purely link-based tactics, prioritise securing your site technically first — this is a security issue with SEO consequences, not primarily an SEO issue in itself.
Less common than many site owners assume — most unexplained ranking drops trace back to algorithm updates, technical issues, or content quality changes rather than a deliberate competitor attack.
Google's systems are generally resilient against link-based attacks specifically, making this a less effective tactic than it once was, though it is not entirely impossible in every case.
Google provides a spam report form, though it primarily uses these reports as one signal among many rather than guaranteeing individual investigation of every report.

Monitor your backlink profile for sudden, unexplained spikes in low-quality links — this is the clearest, most common early signal of a genuine negative SEO attack in progress.
