A well-structured URL serves both search engines and human readers simultaneously — it gives a small, if modest, relevance signal to Google, and it gives a real visitor immediate, trustworthy context about what a link or search result actually leads to before they click it.
A URL is often the very first piece of information a person sees about a page, before the title tag, before the content — a confusing or generic URL wastes that first impression.
Changing an existing page's URL to improve its structure carries genuine migration risk and should not be done lightly for pages already performing well — reserve deliberate restructuring for genuinely problematic URLs, and always implement a proper 301 redirect when a change is made.
Tracking parameters (for campaigns, referrals) are sometimes necessary but should be handled with proper canonical tags pointing to the clean, parameter-free version, to avoid creating unnecessary duplicate content variations.
Not significantly on its own, though excessively long, unwieldy URLs can indirectly correlate with poor site structure or content organisation — reasonable length is more about usability than a direct ranking factor.
Where natural and genuinely descriptive, yes, but forcing an awkward keyword insertion at the expense of clarity is not worth it — descriptive clarity should take priority over exact keyword inclusion.
Generally only if there is a clear, significant problem (like meaningless ID-based URLs) — the migration risk of changing many existing, performing URLs purely for a marginal structural improvement often outweighs the benefit.
