A zero-click search is one where the searcher gets their answer directly on the search results page itself — through a featured snippet, a knowledge panel, an AI Overview, or a Google Business Profile listing — without ever clicking through to any website. These now represent a significant and growing share of all searches.
Google has steadily added more on-page answer formats over the years — featured snippets, knowledge panels, Business Profile integration and now AI Overviews — each designed to answer certain query types directly on the results page rather than requiring a click to an external source.
Brand visibility and impression value persist even without a click — a searcher who sees your business name, logo or content cited in a zero-click answer still registers a brand impression, and for local businesses, a Business Profile answering a query directly (hours, location) often leads to a real-world visit or call that never shows up as a website click at all.
Not every valuable outcome from search requires a click — a phone call prompted by a Business Profile listing is a genuine business result a click-through metric would never capture.
Call tracking, direction request tracking through Business Profile insights, and brand search volume trends over time can all help capture zero-click value that a pure click-through rate metric would otherwise completely miss.
Estimates vary and continue shifting as AI Overviews expand, but a substantial and growing minority of searches, particularly informational and local ones, now resolve without any click to an external site.
Not entirely — brand visibility and, for local businesses, calls and direction requests still deliver real value even without a click, making continued optimisation worthwhile despite reduced direct traffic.
Not directly and explicitly as a standalone metric, though comparing impressions against clicks for specific queries can reveal where zero-click behaviour is likely occurring.
