Shopify, WooCommerce or custom: choosing a platform for a D2C brand

A practical comparison of Shopify, WooCommerce and a custom build for a D2C brand, based on catalogue size, growth plans and technical resourcing.

A customer paying at a retail counter

Most D2C brands spend more time deciding between Shopify, WooCommerce and a custom build than the decision actually warrants at their current stage. For the majority of brands under a few hundred SKUs, the platform matters far less than the product, the marketing and the operations behind it.

Shopify: the default for most brands

Fast to launch, a large app ecosystem for nearly any feature need, and hosting handled for you. The tradeoff is ongoing subscription and app costs that scale with revenue, and less flexibility for highly custom storefront behaviour.

  • Best for: most D2C brands, especially pre-scale or with a small technical team.
  • Watch for: app costs stacking up as you add functionality — audit them every few months.

WooCommerce: for brands already on WordPress

A sensible choice if you already have significant content on WordPress and want commerce integrated into the same system, with more control over hosting costs. It requires more hands-on maintenance than Shopify's managed environment.

The platform rarely decides whether a D2C brand succeeds — the product, the margin and the marketing usually decide that first.

Custom build: only once the reason is concrete

Worth it once you have a specific, expensive limitation on an existing platform — a subscription model, complex configurator, or scale that makes per-transaction platform fees genuinely significant. Building custom before that point is usually solving a problem you do not have yet.

The takeaway

Start on Shopify unless you have a specific, well-understood reason not to — most D2C brands overthink this decision at the expense of actually launching.
