Storefront and checkout optimisation for D2C brands

A structured approach to testing and improving a D2C storefront over time, from the homepage through checkout, without redesigning everything at once.

A customer paying at a retail counter

A full storefront redesign feels productive but usually makes it impossible to know which specific change improved (or hurt) conversion. A more disciplined approach tests one part of the funnel at a time, starting with whichever step is losing the largest share of visitors.

Where to look first

  • Funnel analytics showing the biggest single drop-off point — often product page to cart, or cart to checkout start.
  • Session recordings or heatmaps on that specific page to see where visitors hesitate or click something unresponsive.
  • Direct customer feedback or support tickets mentioning friction at that stage.

Testing changes without guessing

Where traffic volume allows, A/B test a specific change — a different CTA, a simplified form, an added trust badge — rather than assuming a redesign will help. Where traffic is too low for a reliable test, make the change, then compare a full month's conversion rate before and after.

A full redesign that changes everything at once teaches you nothing about what actually mattered.

A realistic cadence

One focused improvement a month, measured properly, compounds into meaningful conversion gains over a year — a more reliable path than an occasional large redesign project.

The takeaway

Optimise one step of the funnel at a time, starting with the step losing the most visitors — a full redesign makes it impossible to know what actually worked.
