Patient-facing collateral for clinics: brochures, signage and consent material

How to design clinic brochures, in-facility signage and consent forms so patients actually read and understand them, and where design choices affect compliance.

A clinician talking with a patient

Patient-facing material is read under stress, often quickly, in a waiting room or right before a procedure. Design choices that would just be preferences elsewhere — font size, plain language, clear structure — genuinely affect whether a patient understands what they are signing or being told.

  • Plain language, avoiding legal or clinical jargon where a simpler word exists.
  • Font size and spacing that is comfortable to read, including for older patients.
  • Key risks and next steps highlighted, not buried in dense paragraphs.
  • A translated version available for patients whose primary language is not the default.

Signage that reduces anxiety, not adds to it

Clear directional signage and simple explanations of what happens next at each stage of a visit reduce patient stress measurably. This is a design problem as much as an operational one, and worth the same care as marketing materials.

A brochure a patient cannot read comfortably fails at its only job, regardless of how well it is designed visually.

Brand consistency in clinical material

Keep the same visual identity across marketing brochures and clinical information sheets so patients recognise material as coming from the same trusted source, without letting design ever compromise the clarity of medical information.

The takeaway

Write consent forms and health information at a reading level a worried, distracted patient can actually process on a first read.
