SEO for API manufacturers and CDMOs: ranking for the molecule, not just the company

Why API manufacturers and CDMOs should build content around specific molecules and CAS numbers, and how to structure technical pages for a regulatory-focused buyer.

A formulator or CDMO looking for a second source for an API rarely searches a company name first. They search the molecule — often by name and CAS number — because that is the specific thing their regulatory filing depends on. A company page listing only broad therapeutic categories is invisible to that search.

Build molecule-specific pages

One page per API, including the CAS number, grade (pharmacopeial standard met), and key specifications, matches exactly what a procurement or regulatory reviewer searches, and gives them enough information to begin an initial screening before any direct contact.

  • CAS number and molecule name stated clearly, not buried in a PDF only.
  • Pharmacopeial compliance (USP, EP, IP, JP) stated per grade offered.
  • Regulatory filing support offered (DMF availability, CEP status) stated explicitly.

Document request as the real conversion goal

A buyer's real next step is usually requesting a specification sheet, sample or DMF, not filling out a generic contact form. Build the document request flow directly into each molecule page, and track it as the primary conversion event.

A regulatory reviewer switching an approved supplier is slow to move — but they will not even start if they cannot find your molecule and its documentation online.

Trade show and conference search overlap

Buyers who meet you at CPHI or a similar event often search your company name plus the specific molecule discussed weeks later — make sure that combination is answerable clearly on your site.

The takeaway

Build one page per API or molecule, including the CAS number and key specifications in the page text — this is exactly what a procurement or regulatory searcher types.
